What Active and Passive Voice are
How to easily spot them
How to change from Active to Passive (and back!)
When to choose Passive Voice for your writing
Let’s jump in — you’re going to master this skill today!
Voice refers to the relationship between the subject and the verb of a sentence.
| Feature | Active Voice | Passive Voice |
|---|---|---|
| Focus | Who is doing the action | What is receiving the action |
| Subject | Performs the action | Receives the action |
| Common in… | Stories, essays, everyday talk | Reports, processes, scientific writing |
In Active Voice, the subject does the action.
Examples:
The boy threw the ball.
Esther wrote a beautiful letter.
Kwame ate all the cake.
🔵 Pattern:
Subject + Verb + Object
🎯 Remember: Active voice is usually clear, direct, and powerful.
In Passive Voice, the action is done to the subject.
Examples:
The ball was thrown by the boy.
A beautiful letter was written by Esther.
All the cake was eaten by Kwame.
🔵 Pattern:
Object + Be (correct tense) + Past Participle + (by + Subject)
| Structure Part | Active Voice Example | Passive Voice Example |
|---|---|---|
| Subject | The chef | The meal |
| Verb | cooked | was cooked |
| Object | the meal | (by the chef) (optional in passive) |
Full Example Comparison:
| Active Sentence | Passive Sentence |
|---|---|
| The chef cooked the meal. | The meal was cooked by the chef. |
| Active Voice Example | Passive Voice Example |
|---|---|
| The dog bit the man. | The man was bitten by the dog. |
| My sister will bake the cake. | The cake will be baked by my sister. |
| Scientists discovered a cure. | A cure was discovered by scientists. |
Use passive voice when:
The doer is unknown:
Example: The purse was stolen.
The doer is not important:
Example: The rules were changed last year.
You want to sound formal or scientific:
Example: The experiment was conducted carefully.
Here’s a step-by-step guide:
| Step | What to Do | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Identify the object of the active verb | The letter (object) |
| 2 | Make it the new subject | The letter |
| 3 | Choose the correct tense of “be” | is (present simple) |
| 4 | Add the past participle of the verb | written |
| 5 | Optionally add “by + doer” | by the girl |
Result:
✅ The letter is written by the girl.
Be Forms Table:
| Tense | Be Form | Example (Passive) |
|---|---|---|
| Simple Present | am / is / are | The books are read. |
| Present Continuous | am being / is being / are being | The cake is being baked. |
