Hi amazing learner! 🌟
Have you ever finished a story and thought, “Wow, that taught me something!” or “That story really made me think”?
Every good story, poem, or drama teaches us something — sometimes clearly, sometimes hidden beneath the surface.
This “something” is called the theme or message of the story.
In this lesson, you’ll learn how to spot the important lessons hidden inside stories, how to explain them clearly, and how to connect them to real life.
Ready? Let’s unlock the hidden treasures in stories!
1. What is a Theme?
A theme is the main idea, lesson, or big truth about life that a story shares with the reader.
It is not just what happens in the story (that’s the plot); it’s what the story teaches you.
Examples of Common Themes:
| Theme | Meaning | Example Story |
|---|---|---|
| Friendship | True friends help and support each other. | The Lion King |
| Bravery | Facing fears even when afraid. | Mulan |
| Hard Work | Hard work brings success. | Ananse and the Pot of Wisdom |
| Good vs Evil | Good often wins over bad. | Cinderella |
| Greed | Being greedy leads to trouble. | The Greedy Dog |
2. What is a Message?
A message is the specific advice, lesson, or warning the writer wants you to learn.
It is often connected to the theme, but usually more direct.
Example:
Story: The Tortoise and the Hare
Theme: Slow and steady wins the race.
Message: Don’t be overconfident or lazy even if you think you’re better.
3. How to Find the Theme or Message
Ask yourself these questions:
What problem or challenge does the main character face?
How does the character solve the problem?
What important life lesson does the character (or reader) learn?
How do I feel after reading the story? What lesson sticks with me?
4. Themes vs Plot (Important Difference!)
| Plot | Theme |
|---|---|
| What happens in the story (the events). | What the story teaches (the lesson about life). |
| Example: A girl loses a race but tries again. | Example: Never give up even after failure. |

Exercise 4: Create Your Own
Think of any short story or movie you know. Fill this table:
| Title | Main Problem | Solution | Theme |

Example:
| Title | Frozen | | Main Problem | Elsa’s powers cause problems | | Solution | Love and acceptance | | Theme | True love and self-acceptance conquer fear |
In this lesson, you have learned:
A theme is the big life idea a story teaches.
A message is the specific advice or warning the story gives.
Plot is the sequence of events; theme is the life lesson.
You can find a theme by asking what problem the character faces and what lesson we learn.
Think about a story you recently read or a movie you watched.
What life lesson did you learn from it?
Was it about friendship, courage, honesty, hard work, or something else?
Write 3–5 sentences about the theme and message of that story!
